Classic Recommendations – The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES, Wii Virtual Console, Gameboy Advance)
I’ve been saving ‘A Link to the Past’ for a special occasion – and what could be more special than what is this coming Monday?
That’s right – the 20th anniversary of this fantastic game. The game has placed in many lists of ‘greatest games of all time’, many rank it as their favourite Zelda game – myself included, and this coming Monday it turns 20. After reinventing the wheel – and seeing only marginal success – with the second Zelda game, they returned back to what made the first Zelda game so great when they made LttP. The formula is largely the same as the first one, but it brings so much more to the table. LttP is the first Zelda to feature the ‘alternate worlds’ concept that has returned in so many of the Zelda games that have followed, as well as many other ‘firsts’ such as the Hookshot, the Master Sword, the flute, and the Pegasus Boots.
The game is a top-down adventure featuring several multi-level dungeons, one of the best soundtracks of the era, and one of the largest gameworlds of any SNES game. Best of all, it still holds up fairly well to this day, as long as the 8 bit graphics don’t deter you. The gameplay is still very fun, the story is still quite cool, and the music is still incredible. If you’re wanting to get a bit of a history lesson before playing Skyward Sword – or you just want a fun experience – go ahead and get this for your Virtual Console and have a blast with one of the best games of all time.
