Best of 2011 – Overall Awards

And now – in honour of the new years – we have our third and final section of our ‘Best of 2011 awards’ – our ‘Overall’ awards – including the prestigious ‘Best of 2011’ award.

Most Epic Moment: Uncharted 3’s Plane Crash scene

While I’m sure most of us expected the plane crash due to the cover and menu screen… when it happened it still blew me away. The execution, integration, and overall impact of the scene was just amazing.

Runners up: inFamous 2 – The Nuke, Gears of War 3 – The Ending

Best Game For All Ages: Rayman Origins

The game is fantastic and fun, includes a multiplayer option for families to play together, has a dynamic and fun soundtrack, and just overall is one of the best ‘all ages’ games you can find.

Runner up: Eufloria, Super Mario 3D Land

Best Action/Adventure Game: Uncharted 3

Every aspect of Uncharted 3 all combined to make it the epitome of what an ‘action game’ should be – with a strong story, amazing cinematic quality, well designed gameplay, and even multiplayer that was a great deal of fun to partake in.

Runner up: inFamous 2, Hunted: The Demon’s Forge

Best Shooter: Gears of War 3

Despite some hefty competition in the TPS market this year, Gears 3 delivered the best shooter experience around with responsive shooting controls, a solid story, some amazing moments and very good ‘impact’ to the shooting – which is something a lot of games don’t really do well.

Runners up: Uncharted 3, Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

Best RPG: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Now, I know I haven’t reviewed this yet, so I’m giving you a bit of a spoiler here, but The Legend of Heroes for your PSP is one of the best JRPGs I’ve ever seen – easily in the league of the early Final Fantasy games or Mario RPG, etc. Far and away, this is the best RPG of the year with a strong, coherent story, interesting gameplay mechanics, enough challenge to make it fun, and a very very interesting ending.

Runners up: White Knight Chronicles 2, Dragon Age: Origins

Best Platformer: Rayman Origins

Rayman has returned to us after a long time out of the spotlight… and he has done so in absolutely amazing form. I could not put this game down until I finished it – and I had the motivation to go back and do everything except the time trials. Amazing platformer, one of the best I’ve ever played.

Runners up: Super Mario 3D Land, Alice: Madness Returns

Best Downloadable Title: Eufloria

This charming little strategy gem is worth every bit of the money it costs to buy it, and more. I haven’t had a chance to spend as much time with it as I’d have liked, but I still go back and find time for a bit more strategy action every so often.

Runners up: Trine 2, Pixeljunk Shooter 2

Best Re-release or Remake: Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection

Final Fantasy IV is one of my favourite games of all time – probably my favourite RPG of all time. To be able to get the entire Final Fantasy IV story including the After Years and the all-new Interlude segment for a discount price for my psp seemed too good to be true. But it was true, it was all true. And I am glad they didn’t tamper too much with the original when re-releasing it.

Runners up: Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

Best Strategy Game: Might and Magic Heroes 6

This one was kind of an unfair category considering the scale. Heroes 6 was a fantastic fully featured turn based strategy game, and most of the other RTS titles were very small, downloadable, or independent titles. But Heroes 6 still delivered a fantastic turn based strategy experience – the best that M&M:H has been since Heroes 3.

Runners up: Anno 2070, Eufloria

Best Handheld Title: The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky

Picking up its second win this year, Trails in the Sky takes our best Handheld Title as well. The running was very close in this one, with several other amazing Handheld titles available, but the charm of The Legend of Heroes was just too much to beat.

Runners up: Super Mario 3D Land, The 3rd Birthday

Best Exclusive Title: Uncharted 3

Not having enough Wii or 360 exclusives to do a full category this year, we combined the exclusives all into one. Uncharted 3 is the best exclusive game of the year, for obvious reasons such as the ones stated above in all of its other award winning categories.

Runners up: Gears of War 3, inFamous 2

Best Multiplatform Title: Rayman Origins

Rayman, with its incredibly charm, unparalleled fun value, and good amount of replayability takes the prize for the Best Multiplatform Game of 2011.

Runners up: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Catherine

And now, last but certainly not least, we go onto the final category:

Game of the Year: Rayman Origins

What can I say? I loved this game. I cannot give it enough praise. It was fun, charming, with a really well-designed difficulty curve, replayability, and fantastic visual and audio design.. there’s nothing not to love about this game.

Runners up: Uncharted 3, Gears of War 3
