Looking Back: 2011 Year In Review

Ah another year has passed, and now that we’ve had a month for it all to settle in… let’s go over the highlights and moments of pure fail that the year offered us.

Highlights:

Michael – I think the clear winner is Sony’s ‘Michael’ ad. That is probably the best overall video-game related advertisement I’ve ever seen, and it still amuses me every time I take time to watch it.

Blizzcon 2011 – The Blizzard DotA trailer from Blizzcon 2011 was just hilarious and so classy. Also noteworthy is the Black Soulstone cinematic from Diablo 3.

Catherine – In the middle of a boring summer, with not much to play… Catherine comes out and charms me. Perfect timing, amazing game. Not the best game I’ve ever played, but the combination of sheer challenge and intriguing plot made it such a refreshing change from sitting on my ass replaying older games.

Icarus Rising – The trailer for this at E3 2011 was unbelievable. Had me so excited for that game, and actually interested in the 3DS.

Kinect’s ‘Gunsmith’ in Future Soldier – Kinect has shown next to no gaming application outside of pure motion games. But this E3 changed that with the rather unique and very interesting demo of the Gunsmith feature using Kinect.

Skyrim’s Horrible Stealth Implementation – Yes, I call this a highlight. Even though it was incredibly stupid and horribly ruined my immersion into the game, I got more enjoyment and laughs out of watching the NPCs go ‘It must’ve been my imagination’ with an arrow sticking out of their head than anything else in that game. It was the best part of the game, and also one of the worst parts of the game.

The Overall Game Lineup – Last year had a ridiculously good lineup of games. A lineup that was so amazing that it was hard to write this section because I kept going back to ‘oh ya and this game was a highlight’. From the start of the year to the end, we were full of amazing titles that just kept getting better. It even had the best JRPG and the best Platformer I’ve played in easily 5 years, if not 10. Which is amazing to be able to say.

Low points:

PSN Outage – Like Sony won the highpoints with their commercial, I think the fiasco around the PSN outage was probably the lowpoint of the year. The biggest fail being the delay in announcing information relating to what exactly happened. Let’s face it, anyone can get hacked – but not saying what the problem was for so long… that killed their credibility and it still hasn’t been fully restored.

The Wii-U – One of the worst console names I’ve ever heard, it confused, baffled, and flabbergasted the gaming community. Announced more as a concept than a console, people were left scratching their heads and not being sure what to think.

Blizzcon 2011 – The ‘Corpsegrinder controversy’ . That really dulled the atmosphere and made a lot of people really uneasy. Really soured a lot of peoples’ enjoyment of the event, and was a huge mistake on the company’s part.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North – How could a company get Lord of the Rings so wrong? I was so disappointed. Between glaring AI and gameplay flaws, horrendous mishandling of the lore, and other general problems… just such a problem.

3DS Launch – The Launch of the 3DS was so underwhelming… I honestly think that every decision made relating to the 3ds launch by Nintendo was wrong. It looks too much like the DS which made people hesitant to switch, it had no launch software that was worth mentioning, it was priced too high for what it was… everything just led to the obvious conclusion of ‘this won’t work’. Luckily they corrected some of those errors… but the launch was still one of those ‘wtf’ moments of the year.

Skyrim – I might be one of the minority here, but Skyrim overall was a lowpoint for me. Once I’d gotten over the initial ‘omg’ factor of stepping INTO Skyrim – and I will admit that that is a great experience that everyone should have – I realized that essentially I was playing a game with bad mechanics, worse than average story, terrible graphical issues, tons of glitches, and overall worse than average graphics. It really let me down.

So everyone… what’re your highs and lows of 2011? Rant, reminisce, and relive at your leisure in the comments below!

I was going to bash on Skyrim, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • The internet has been lacking in arrow to the knee jokes in the past few weeks. Good job.
