The Blade’s Edge – May Update

With how quiet I’ve been lately, I wanted to bring back my monthly update posts to go into a bit of what I’m doing, what’s going on with me, and what I have coming up.

Before anything else, I want to explain what’s gotten in the way of my writing, and also apologize to you for the lack of content.

First and foremost, my Grandmother has been in the hospital in critical condition. Nobody was really sure if she was going to make it out… but she seems to be recovering, so at least there’s good news for now on that front. Going up to see her, and all the drama that’s been happening within my family around this, has been very distracting and has often kept me from writing either due to me not being around or, more frequently, due to my mind just not being here. Hard to concentrate on gaming when family is getting in the way. I’ve been spending most of my downtime watching E-Sports in an unthinking state just to keep my mind off matters.

I’ve also been dealing with a bit of depression, which has really made it hard to write. Writing takes a surprising amount of confidence, and when you start to lose that, getting the words out becomes damn-near impossible. I won’t bore you with the circumstances that led to that, since nobody wants to hear me whine or complain about my problems. But suffice it to say that circumstances are on an upswing for me, and I believe this is the end of that for now at least.

Thirdly, I’ve been in search for a new job which has taken a lot of time and thought. If I never have to write another cover letter, it will be too soon! But I’ll be starting a new job tomorrow, so that’s over as well and I can get my mind back on writing about what I love rather than about who I am. A definite relief.

Getting away from problems and into what we’re really here for now… the content. I’ve just finished watching Bodacious Space Pirates and Blast of Tempest, so will be writing something about those. I’ve also had a lot of time to watch AMVs with my writing troubles, so I’m hoping to spotlight at least one of those. I played through Tomb Raider as well and am working on the review of Lara Croft’s latest adventure. In addition, since I’ve been spending so much time with League of Legends – both as a spectator and a player – lately I’m looking into ways to incorporate some of that here as well. Not sure what will come of this, but it’s an idea I’ve been toying with for a while so we’ll see what comes of that.

As to what I’ve got planned over the next few weeks… on the anime front, I’ve been watching Attack on Titan and Inuyasha, both of which I will be unlikely to write much about. Attack on Titan is currently being simulcast by Crunchyroll, so it will be a long while until it’s finished, and Inuyasha has a positively ridiculous episode count. There are one or two other anime I’m interested in, but haven’t started watching.

Moving on to gaming, May is going to be a very slow month this year. But I have some plans nonetheless. Going beyond the Tomb Raider review that should be coming soon, there should be a fair bit of handheld content over the next month since I’ll have more time to play on my handhelds with the transit time to and from my new job. To start that off I’m going to be spending some more time with Ragnarok Odyssey as well as Soul Sacrifice for my Vita. I may also pick up the Megaman games coming out for the 3DS – it’s been a while since I’ve been able to relive my childhood love of Megaman, so that’s something I’m strongly considering. When at home, I’ve also got a few older games that I’ve been meaning to get back to for my PS3 that I’ve been putting off for a long time. Specifically I’ve been wanting to do replays of Record of Agarest War Zero and Dragon’s Dogma, both of which were games I felt were tragically underrated when they first launched.

As a final minor bad bit of news, circumstances have forced me to be unable to attend KeyCon 2013. It will still be taking place in a just a few weeks, so make sure you attend if you’re in Winnipeg and interested in fantasy and science fiction… just unfortunately I won’t be able to make it.

If you want more frequent updates on what I’m up to, [The Blade’s Edge] page is frequently updated and has a less detailed list of what’s going on.
