Most Anticipated of 2015 – Big JRPG Franchises

It’s time to start showcasing my most anticipated titles of 2015. Each Wednesday, from now until New Years, we’ll be showcasing some of the games and anime among next year’s expected releases that I am the most excited for.

For our first set, we’ll be going to one of my favourite sources of entertainment… long-running JRPG franchises! This year we’ve got a few of them coming down the pipeline, and I absolutely cannot wait! So let’s not keep you waiting, here are the first few titles…

Tales of Zestiria

After Graces, Xillia, and Xillia 2 – I’ve become a big fan of the Tales series… so when I heard that, in honour of the series upcoming 20th anniversary, they’re releasing Tales of Zestiria – well you can imagine that I was very excited.

I’ve been careful not to spoil too many details about it, because I don’t really have to worry – the name means quality, and there’s no point in tasting it before it is ready when it’s almost guaranteed to be good…. but fine, since you insist, here’s a trailer for you all.

The Tales games typically feature long, intricate stories with incredible humour and likeable characters but just as importantly they couple that story with exciting combat with a great pace. They are fast becoming some of my favourite games, and I can’t wait to see what this next entry has to offer.

Final Fantasy Type-0

I’ve talked about this game before, but it was originally one of the three Fabula Nova Crystalis titles known as Final Fantasy Agito XIII. It was rebranded as Type-0 and released in Japan years ago… and after years of petitions, begging, and pleading Square was finally convinced to localize it for Western audiences. While it won’t be coming out for its original handheld platforms, it will be arriving for the PS4 next year.

Everything I’ve heard about this game paints it as amazing, both from cinematics and from reviews written by people who have played the original. This is a game that I have such high hopes for… and I am so excited to be able to play it on my PS4 next year.

Atelier Shallie – Alchemists of the Dusk Sea

Like the Tales series, the Atelier games have been fast becoming some of my favourites. It has been fascinating to watch this series gradually work towards the perfect formula for the crafting JRPG… they’re not quite there, but with every installment they work out another imperfection. I am eager to see what they manage to improve since Escha & Logy was so incredibly well made.

The Atelier games are also some of my favourites for their soundtracks and their opening sequences… and, judging by this subtle yet gorgeous cinematic, Shallie seems like it will be no exception.

Persona 5

And finally, our JRPG franchise journey takes us to what is probably one of the most anticipated games of this generation as Atlus tries to follow up on the utterly phenomenal achievement of Persona 4 and Persona 4: The Golden. Persona 5 has been rumoured for a long time, but was formally announced only last year… with further details coming this year at a Sony press conference. Persona 5 is to be coming out next year worldwide(although probably Japan first) on both Playstation 3 and Playstation 4.

To put into perspective how exciting this news is… when it was announced, Persona was trending worldwide on twitter. People cannot wait, and for good reason – P4G is probably my favourite Vita game of all time and it is easily one of the best games I’ve played in a very long time.

Next week we’ll be delving more into the games slated to come out for the Playstation 4 next year… check back next Wednesday to find out which PS4 games, aside from the above, I’m excited for!
