The end of a year is a time to reminisce on the good that happened in the year that is leaving, but also a time for building up excitement about what is to come. I’ve already talked 2017, unveiling my Game of the Year list just a short while ago, so I wanted to take some time as the year ends to talk about what I am excited for in the year to come. With how packed 2017 was, what could 2018 possibly have left for us?
It’s time to close the book on 2016’s gaming history. A big year for game releases is behind us, with several massive franchises popping up throughout the year… and a lot of pleasant little surprises too. We had some games that had been over a decade in waiting, and others that we only found out about weeks before their arrival. Games of all genres graced our consoles and computers, with sequels, expansions, reboots, and brand new titles all coming out this past year.
What amazed me this year was how few games were quite what I was expecting. Several games I expected to love I wasn’t terribly fond of, while others that I was concerned about I ended up being blown away by. Picking the games for this year’s list had a few obvious spots, but there are about 7 games fighting for those last couple slots, none of which are clear picks.
So without any further delay… let’s jump into the Best Games of 2016!
I know, I know… it’s September, we shouldn’t be talking about Spring anymore… but here we are. I’ve finally finished the last of my Spring and Winter anime reviews, so it’s time for us to do our semi-annual anime wrap-up!
Winter and Spring gave us a plethora of unremarkable anime, which has made it easy – for the most part – to recognize the gems among them. It’s easy to tell an amazing show when all you see is mediocrity, afterall. So what we have here are those standout shows. The ones that rose above the rest, cast off the cloak of mediocrity, and did something special.
It’s a bit late, I know… but Legend of Heroes games take a long time to complete, and deserve the time they take. Now that we’ve finished reviewing Trails in the Sky: Second Chapter, it’s time to wrap up 2015 by showing off the overall best games of the year.
This was actually one of the easiest lists I’ve ever created because, to be frank, there really were only 6 games that turned out well enough last year to rank from among those that I was interested in. I only played around a dozen new games last year, and of those, nearly half were pretty big disappointments. Now, this may make you wonder about the quality of the games on this list here… but have no fear, nearly all of these games are contenders for the Shadow’s Sixty so while we may be lacking in quantity, we were certainly not lacking in quality.
Hello! It’s finally time. I’ve wanted to do something like this for a long time. Over the course of the next several months, we’ll be gradually counting down my favourite games ever. Of course, there has to be a cut off, so I’ve selected the end of 2015. Any games that came out during 2015 or earlier are eligible for this list. This gives us ~30 years of gaming to play with, so this was an incredibly hard list to create, and has taken me weeks of deliberating to narrow it down to just 60.
We’ve got games of nearly every genre here, including some genres I don’t often play anymore. We’ve got old games, new games, and everything in between. Obviously, I’m just one man… I haven’t played every game, so I apologize if there are any games you really loved that got left off because of that. One notable game in that category is Undertale which I suspect I would have loved had I had the time to play it, given what I’ve seen of the game.
Each entry into this countdown will cover 6 games as we build towards the coveted Top 6 games of all time, according to me. Hope you enjoy this list, and if you have any questions about why I’ve placed things where they are, or if you disagree with me… please, feel free to comment!
